The 'Bear' Necessities for Your Summer Holiday!

Every summer holiday, whether it’s a peaceful countryside escape, a trip to the coast, or an adventure somewhere exotic, is made even more memorable with a teddy bear by your side. Since the teddy bears creation in 1902, these cherished companions have travelled the world, offering comfort and reassurance to generations of children and grown-ups alike.

The story of the teddy bear began in 1902, when US President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt embarked on a hunting expedition in Mississippi. After refusing to shoot a captive black bear, his act of compassion inspired a political cartoon that ultimately led to the creation of one of the world’s most beloved toys.

By the 1920s, teddy bears had become treasured gifts for birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions. Their soft texture and portable size meant they were easily packed into suitcases, tucked into school bags, and taken along on family holidays, providing companionship and a reminder of home wherever their adventures led.

Throughout both World Wars, children held onto their dearest bears during air raids and often carried them when evacuating to the countryside, providing a familiar sense of security while leaving their home behind in search of a safer one.

Soldiers also carried little 'Mascot' Bears in the breast pocket of their jacket during WWI. Made by British manufacturer, Farnell, these delightful keepsakes were often gifted by close family and served as mementos of home and their loved ones, as they endured the trenches and the terrors of war.

Today, teddy bears remain trusted travel companions for many, including His Majesty King Charles, who has treasured his bear since childhood. It is understood that throughout the years, ‘Winston’ has been a constant companion to His Majesty, even joining him on various international trips.

Even red-carpet royalty find comfort in their soft toys. For instance, acclaimed actress, Margot Robbie sleeps with her sentimental rabbit plush every night – reflecting how soft toys continue to be an essential part of holidays and adventures for all.

At Merrythought, our traditional hand-crafted teddy bears are designed to become lifelong friends, making them the perfect addition to accompany you or a loved one on that long-awaited summer holiday. And, of course, no journey would be complete without that all-important Teddy Bear Passport to document their travels along the way!
