The Story Behind Paddington’s Beloved Aunt Lucy

Long before Paddington made his way to London, there was Aunt Lucy, his adored aunt who helped raise him in his home country of Peru. It was there that she made her famous, homemade marmalade, using oranges gathered by Uncle Pastuzo and Paddington.

Kind-hearted, wise and endlessly caring, Aunt Lucy first appeared in Michael Bond’s original novel, A Bear Called Paddington, published in 1958. Ever since, she has remained one of the most important figures in Paddington’s story, teaching him the value of kindness, good manners and looking out for others. It was after all, Aunt Lucy, who encouraged Paddington to always be polite and to reserve a “hard stare” for those who forget their manners!
